2023 will continue to be a very interesting year for both employers and job seekers. Job hopping is something for both groups to consider, as this year brings new opportunities and many economic changes. For those looking for new opportunities, you may want to consider 2023 to be your year to change jobs or to find a job if you’re fresh out of school. According to a poll conducted by Nexxt, 90% of poll participants said they were looking for or open to a new job in 2023.
Why will job hopping be a trend this year?
Younger generations have different values. Zoomers and millennials differ from previous generations, such as the Boomers, in that they feel a lot less loyalty to the organizations they work for. Boomers would stick with companies for decades, putting all their eggs into one basket. Whereas younger generations are more loyal to their career goals and developing their skill set. Job seekers out there may be looking to advance professionally, even if it’s not at the place they’ve worked prior.
You want to develop a new skill set or advance the skills you’ve already acquired. There’s been a shift in workers caring more about advancing their skill sets than sticking in a certain role or within a certain company. If you feel you’ve learned and mastered the skills your current or previous organization helped you hone in, it might be time to look for another challenge. Many jobs can act as stepping stones in people’s careers as they search for the next thing. Wherever you are currently, make sure you take advantage of what you can learn there, before moving onto the next. That way, once you feel you’ve learned as much as you can and have had ample time to practice and develop those skills, you’ll have a better idea of the type of role you want next that can challenge or advance your skill set even more.
You’re looking for better pay. This one is the most obvious reason for job hopping in 2023 and serves as an important push for people to find a new job. Living during a time in which inflation rates are high and the cost of living is expensive, many are seeking opportunities that allow them to have more financial comfort in their lives. Money isn’t the only important thing, however. Looking for jobs that have better pay and better benefits, but also serve your professional goals and allow you to grow are important.
People are simply looking for different opportunities. This may be because you’ve spent years at the same company or within the same role and want to try your hand at something new. This may be because the work environment you’ve been in has grown to be toxic or perhaps your professional values don’t align with the company you work for anymore. It’s possible you simply want to try a different job, so go for it.
Many might assume that money is the leading cause behind people switching jobs. That is a big influence on job hopping. However, there are tons of reasons to change occupations. The only way to find out what you like and what you don’t like is by seeing what’s out there.
